PARTYNEXTDOOR - Album Release

Album release live stream for PARTYNEXTDOOR

Amid the Covid-19 outbreak, the world rushed to reshape their plans to fit the new stay-at-home lifestyle. PARTYNEXTDOOR’s album release party was a collaborative event designed by the amazing team at OkiDoki, but as the world started to run towards safety indoors, the album release had to be rethought. The idea was hatched to use PARTYNEXTDOOR’s twitch channel as a platform for his album release, using visuals from the singles he previously released. OkiDoki came up with a narrative inspired by PARTYNEXTDOOR’s love of driving around Toronto at night, contemplating life and listening to music. OkiDoki reached out to me to design & build the experience, what we came up with was an album length visualizer of endlessly streaming worlds that change for each song. Using a voting system, the viewers were able to vote on camera angles, adding an interactive “live only” element to the stream.

PROCESS

The majority of the experience was designed in a weekend, the following monday - wednesday was used for fine tuning and QC. Because of this rushed time-frame, a simple back-end was vigorously fought for. We decided to structure it as a simple “endless runner” game where an array designed level sections (tiles) are lined up end to end in front of the car. The car is given a continuous motion, and as it passes by each tile a new tile is added to the end of the que. Each song was given 2-3 tiles for variety, and as the album transitions into a new song, the new tiles get added to the end of the que.
